Use a well-fitting belt or a measurement at the intended wearing height as your starting point.

REAL MAN · Size and fit

A good belt closes comfortably and leaves room for adjustment. A measured value is more useful than assuming your trouser size is also your belt size.

Distinguish the measurements

Wearing circumference, buckle-to-hole length and total strap length are different. For a conventional belt, measure from the buckle pin’s resting point to the centre of the hole you use, unless the manufacturer specifies another starting point.

Measure with the trousers you will wear

Lay a suitable belt flat without stretching it. Note its width as well as the length. Without a belt, thread a soft tape around the belt-loop line of the actual trousers. Keep it comfortably snug rather than tight. Compare the result with the product’s stated wearing range.

There is no universal number of centimetres to add to every trouser size.

Adjustable does not necessarily mean cut-to-size

A ratchet buckle may offer fine adjustment, but shortening is only appropriate if the specific product instructions permit it. Check the belt width against the loops and do not cut a new strap based on the buckle’s appearance alone.

For gifts, use a well-fitting existing belt as a reference. Consult the shop’s current exchange and return information before ordering.
