REAL MAN · Size and fit

A well-fitting shirt is comfortable when standing, sitting and moving. Slim fit and letter sizes are starting points, not universal measurements.

Start with a shirt that fits

Button a suitable shirt and lay it flat without stretching it. Distinguish body measurements from garment measurements. If a chart lists a flat width, compare a flat width; if it lists circumference, check whether the garment width should be doubled.

Check the measuring method

For a flat collar, measure from the button centre to the end of the buttonhole only when that matches the seller’s instructions. Check where sleeve measurement begins: shoulder-to-cuff and centre-back-to-cuff are different measurements.

Look at chest and waist room, shoulder position and cuff comfort. A slim fit should not pull the button placket apart or prevent reaching forward. Sizes vary between makers and models.

Try sitting and moving

Button the shirt, sit down and reach forward. Check the cuffs with bent arms and whether a tucked shirt stays comfortably in place. For a tie, ensure the fastened collar is comfortable. Consult each product’s actual size information before ordering.
